The Woodward Relays is typically a two-person 6x1 Mile relay, but meet director Greg Dunston explained up front that the full loops were longer than a mile. The extra length of the loop added approximately 15 seconds to the mile for a typical boy and 20 seconds for a typical girl.

Sherwood's Jackson Reams led the first mile followed closely by Walter Johnson's Sean O'Leary. Reams clocked 5:14 for his first loop while O'Leary came through in 5:15.

Right behind the top two was Good Counsel's Jack Riely. Kyle Graves took the baton from Riely and took off after the leaders. Graves took over the lead by about ten seconds on his loop with a 5:21. Sherwood's Kevin Hogan split 5:39 while Walter Johnson's Ishan Dey split 5:34.

By the time Riely received the baton from Graves for his second loop, he had over a ten second advantage on the teams from Walter Johnson and Sherwood. O'Leary of Walter Johnson took off after him and made up a lot of ground while Sherwood faded.

Graves took off in good form while Dey of WJ chased. He followed up his 5:21 lap with a 5:38. Dey maintained distance behind Good Counsel with a 5:40, but the Walter Johnson team with Alex Willett had taken over second place thanks to Willett's 5:24 second loop.

The following lap, O'Leary took off with a purpose after Riely of Good Counsel. O'Leary gained the lead by about 10 seconds on Good Counsel over the final lap with a split of 5:38. It gave Dey enough cushion to run home for the win in 33:23, but Willett again ran a terrific leg in 5:27 to bring his team within six seconds of the winning WJ team.

Willett had a combined time of 16:10 with splits of 5:19-5:24-5:27. O'Leary's splits of 5:15-5:38-5:36 gave him a 16:29 combined time. Had O'Leary and Willett run together, they could have run 32:39, but then a team of Ellis and Dey would not have finished second.

A Sidwell Friends team of Kyle Wilson and John McGowan started out in the middle of the pack with Wilson leading off, but McGowan brought the team closer and closer to the front of the race with every leg. McGowan had the best time of the day out of all competitors, clocking a total time of 15:55 with splits of 5:15 - 5:27 - 5:13. On the final leg, he hunted down a tired Kyle Graves of Good Counsel to capture third place.

Walter Johnson won the boys team title.

Not to be outdone, the Walter Johnson girls also won the team title by sweeping the top two spots.

Churchill's Maryam Fikri led all runners on the first lap with a 6:28. Walter Johnson's Camille Bouvet and Jennifer Spencer were just three seconds behind.

Fikri handed off to Alex Giedd and Giedd took off running, but it wasn't long before Bouvet's teammate Anna Bosse caught her. The two fought all the way until the next exchange, Bosse clocking a 6:18 and Giedd clocking a 6:23.

The following leg was equally intense with Fikri and Bouvet matching stride for stride the entire loop. Both clocked 6:46.

On the second leg, Bosse blew the race open. Giedd ran 6:49 while Bosse ran 6:35.

With less pressure on them, Bouvet ran 6:50 on the last lap and Bosse brought it home for the win in 39:22. Bosse's split of 6:18-6:35-6:20 were by far the best of the day (19:13).

Meanwhile, the other WJ team was gaining ground on the second place Churchill squad. Willett ran a great final leg (just as her brother did in the boys race) and passed the Churchill team in the final stages of the race to finish second in 40:09. Willett's splits of 6:32-6:46-6:34 (19:52) were the second most impressive of the day. Like in the boys race, the top two teammates were broken up on separate teams, but it worked out for the best because Walter Johnson claimed the top two spots and the team trophy.

In the novice race, Churchill sophomore Matthew Kogan led the way and took the victory in 19:55. The top finishing female was Sherwood freshman Amanda Tomlinson in a time of 25:12.
