Boys XC Poll Results

74 valid votes were tabulated for Mocorunning's XC County Championship Poll. Below are the composite results of that poll.

1. Rohann Asfaw, Richard Montgomery 2017
415 Poll Points

The top returner from last year's race, Asfaw has won every race this season except for one (an impressive fourth place finish at Oatlands). He could join Chase Weaverling as the only other non-senior to win the county championship in the last decade.

2. Liam Walsh, Quince Orchard 2016
308 Poll Points

Since 2000, four different schools (Walter Johnson, Northwest, Gaithersburg, and Quince Orchard) have had two different county champions. While he may not be the favorite, Walsh certainly has a chance to make it three for the Cougars on Monday.

3. Michael Abebe, Northwood 2016
277 Poll Points

Abebe was the top MCPS finisher not named Rohann Asfaw at the Oatlands Invitational, and he beat Liam Walsh head-to-head with one shoe in his hand at DCXC. He could be Asfaw's biggest threat on Monday.

4. Branson Oduor, Northwest 2016
274 Poll Points

Oduor embodies this year's Northwest team: the improbable underdog, now ready to make a statement on a big stage. He's also the first boy to receive a top three pre-meet poll ranking after not appearing on Mocorunning's preseason poll since Jackson Reams in 2009.

5. Dylan Kannapell, B-CC 2016
215 Poll Points

It's been an up-and-down year for Kannapell, but his 16:06 at the Adidas XC Invite shows that he is one of the best in Moco when he's on his game. He and Lucas Heinzerling could form the top duo in the county race.

6. Colin SyBing, Thomas S. Wootton 2016
158 Poll Points

After an injury plagued junior season, SyBing's is faring much better in his senior campaign. He has two runner-up finishes at Track & Trail and Coyote (both finishing behind Asfaw) and was just four seconds behind Abebe at the DCXC Invite. He is the top runner for a team that many favor to win this meet.

7. Lucas Heinzerling, B-CC 2016
122 Poll Points

One of the most improved runners in the county, he's been right with Kannapell (and occasionally ahead) this season. He was Moco's top runner at the Bull Run Invite this year.

8. Alejandro Arias, Albert Einstein 2016
88 Poll Points

Aside from racing sick at William & Mary, Arias hasn't finished outside the top three in a race this season. His 17:02 at Bull Run was the third fastest by a MoCo runner this season. The Titans last had a runner in the top ten in 2012 with Nick Simpson and Ben Withbroe.

9. Ben Gersch, Walt Whitman 2016
82 Poll Points

Gersch has finished in the top 25 at both Oatlands and DCXC this season. He will try to continue Whitman's streak of having a runner in the top eleven for four straight seasons. Only Walter Johnson has a longer active stretch.

10. Cliff Tilley, Thomas S. Wootton 2016
71 Poll Points

Tilley's best race came at the DCXC Invite where he beat Gersch and finished just sixteen seconds behind Abebe. 2012 was the last time MoCo saw two separate duos in the top ten (Kannapell/Heinzerling and SyBing/Tilley have a shot, as do Richard Montgomery's Asfaw/Joachim El-Masry).

Other notables:

Joachim El-Masry, Richard Montgomery: A breakout race at the Coyote Run last Thursday throws him into top ten contention.

James Newport, Blake: He's consistently been about 15 seconds behind Arias this season. Blake hasn't had a top fifteen runner since Kyle Gaffney in 2006.

Adam Sarsony, Rockville: He doesn't attract much attention because Rockville hasn't run many big meets, but he was Moco's fourth fastest at Bull Run, just one second behind Arias.

1) Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons (312 Poll Points): Shooting for two titles in three seasons, the Barons have perhaps the deepest team in Moco, with twelve runners already having clocked sub-18 performances. However, only five guys score in cross country, so B-CC will need strong races from their frontrunners to pull it off on Monday.

2) Winston Churchill Bulldogs (289 Poll Points): The Bulldogs 2011 title remains their only county championship since 1980. However, this team continues to produce strong upper-tier runners even following heavy graduation losses. Their potential lack of a top-ten frontrunner could be offset by their relatively tight 1-5 split.

3) Thomas S. Wootton Patriots (262 Poll Points): Wootton has two runners poised for a top-ten finish and two more that can run in the top twenty. Their "x-factor" will be their fifth runner, who could be the difference between a county championship or a third place finish for the Patriots.

4) Walter Johnson Wildcats (198 Poll Points): The Wildcats have the longest streak in Moco of having a top ten finisher at the county meet, dating back to 2008. Even if that streak falls, they still have a strong chance at a top five finish.

5) Northwest Jaguars (172 Poll Points): In September I wrote that the Jaguars, despite finishing eighth in the preseason poll, "could have a much stronger team than anyone anticipates." Seven weeks later, with Northwest aiming at a top three finish, this team is definitely much stronger than people anticipated.

6) Quince Orchard Cougars (141 Poll Points): This Quince Orchard team has a very strong top four runners. However, in order to finish in the top five, they will need a strong performance by one of their other six varsity runners to complement the first group (remember: there are ten varsity runners entered in this meet).

7) Richard Montgomery Rockets (127 Poll Points): They've got the individual favorite and another top ten candidate, but plenty of question marks after that. The frontrunners make them a likely top ten finish, but their lack of depth could hold them out of the top five.

8) Walt Whitman Vikings (106 Poll Points): The dropoff was expected following the losses of their top three runners, but after Ben Gersch they have no sub-18 runners (yet). The Vikings will need solid races from everybody to remain in the county's top ten.

9) Albert Einstein Titans (94 Poll Points): Their top three may be as good as anybody's, but their 4 and 5 runners leave them out of the top five discussion for now. Coach DaSilva always has his runners ready for the big stage, so don't be surprised if the Titans come knocking on the door of a top five finish.

10) Blair Blazers (48 Poll Points): This team epitomizes the "pack over frontrunners" mentality. They may not have a runner finish in the top forty, but their 34-second 1-5 split at the Consortia Championships also suggests their fifth runner won't be far behind. It will be interesting to see how this team fares at the county championships.

Tie breakers: Fans were asked to predict the winning individual time and team score. The average responses were 15:50.4 and 76.4 points.

Choke artists??? The only year Wootton choked, was last year. It was because their 2nd best runner was injured. I'm sorry Wootton demolished your slow-ass school at coyotes.
