2016 vs. 2011 Good Counsel

This year's Good Counsel team is clearly one of the most outstanding collections of track and field athletes ever assembled in Montgomery County. They demonstrated that again this weekend with their 173 point win at the WCAC Championship, 76 points better than the second place team. Good Counsel has a star sprinter, a stud hurdler, and a deep distance squad. They lead Montgomery County this year in the 4x4 (3:19.53) and 4x8 (7:53.52) with not a single runner overlapping between those two relays. I documented in the fall that I believe the 2015 Good Counsel XC squad was the best cross country team that I ever covered and their distance guys were certainly a key to success at yesterday's track meet.

I think back to the best track and field teams that I have seen in covering the county over the last decade-plus. Instantly I think back to the Good Counsel teams of 2009 to 2011 and there are many parallels between those teams and this year's team. For one thing, the Good Counsel team of 2011 won the WCAC title with 174 points as compared to the 173 points accumulated by this year's team. The star athletes from those teams of the past match up similarly to this year's team. For example: Danell Pratt versus Sean Sutton; Ian Davis versus Kyle Martin; Jack Wavering versus Jack Riely.

Even though 2011 is ancient history in the eyes of a high schooler, I had to compare that 2011 team to this year's team. I took the top three performances from the WCAC Championship in 2011 and 2016 and scored the hypothetical meet with 5-3-1 scoring in individual events and 5-0 scoring in relays. The findings were as I suspected. It would have been a tight meet with 2011 beating out 2016: 69 to 64. The 2016 team had the edge on the track but the 2011 team pulled away in the field events with the help of recently drafted Washington Redskin, Kendall Fuller. Of course, in a real world meet, the coaches may have moved their athletes around differently to play to their strengths and expose the weaknesses of their opponent.

Interesting that you chose to compare to 2011 of the three GC teams from 2009-2011. It makes for an interesting juxtaposition because of the similarities you highlighted in the beginning. But the 2010 GC track team in my opinion was significantly better and more well-rounded in all events than each of these teams. We just happened to run into a Gonzaga team that has to be one of the best track teams of all time in the DC area (they put together a 7:52 4x800 when they held off a 1:50 guy). Nonetheless, fascinating piece and your insights and breakdown are great as always.
