The 'C' Club Track Meet was started in 1919 by the Central High School Alumni Association which was referred to as the 'C' Club. The 'C' stands for "Captain's." The meet was the first major spring invitational track meet hosted in Washington D.C. for high schools. A 1919 Washington Post article described the original meet of fifteen schools as "the most pretentious scholastic offering of its nature that Washington has ever had." (Washington Post, 1919)

The out-of-town meet attendance boomed in the mid-1920's and remained strong until the mid-1940's. The meet was abandoned in 1949 according to the Washington Post due to the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations' refusal to sanction the "C" Club Meet and its threat to boycott District schools, of which host Central High School was one, unless it refused to participate in the meet. (Heft, 1949).

From the 1949 Washington Post explanation for the cancelation of the 'C' Club Meet, "Bob Newby, secretary of the school's alumni athletic group...says, '...the Federation has generated controversies among public private parochial and prep schools by constantly changing rules and standards of equipment. During the same time, the schools in the Washington area have enjoyed the best of athletic relations.'" (Heft, 1949).

Newby hoped to reinstate the 'C' Club Meet the following year (Heft, 1949), but by 1950, Central High School was the focus of political and socioeconomic pressure. The Central High School building utilized half of its student capacity while the derelict Cardozo High School building, a school for colored students in the era before Brown vs. the Board of Education, was overcrowded. The D.C. School Board faced a resolution to disband Central High School and occupy the building with the students of Cardozo High (Carper, 1950 Feb 12).

The move was "bitterly opposed by white citizens" (Carper, 1950 Feb 12). Citizens who cherished the history of Central High School argued that there were better solutions to the overcrowding problems, but no reported solution included desegregation. Ultimately, the school board passed the resolution to disband Central High to avoid costs associated with construction of new schools and to avoid additional lawsuits related to the Separate but Equal doctrine (Carper, 1950 Feb 12). In 1950, Central High School was disbanded and white students transferred to neighboring schools. The Central High building re-opened as Cardozo High School for Negroes in the fall of 1950 (Carper, 1950 Jun 18).
