Storylines

Turesson or Goldberg? Goldberg or Turesson? More like...course record or no course record? Abigail Green's 2016 course record of 17:46.62 is stout, but these girls have something that she never had: competition. Never before has MoCo had two star athletes under 17:50 entering the county championship meet. Turesson has the edge on the 5k leaderboard with a 17:42.7 when Goldberg ran 17:48.7 in a different race at the Great American XC Fest. Goldberg has the head-to-head edge with a 4 second advantage over Turesson in their only meeting this year at the Oatlands Invitational. Both runners will vie for a state title and national championship qualification later in the year, but before that, this matchup should make for the greatest girls race in Montgomery County Championship Meet history. 51% of voters selected Goldberg to win on Saturday. 46% of voters selected Turesson to win.

Fans favored the Whitman girls to repeat as team county champions. The Whitman girls seemed untouchable for most of the year, but WJ had a stronger showing than Whitman up I-95 at the Manhattan Invitational last weekend. WJ and Whitman should both have four runners in the top twenty in the county so it will come down to that #5 runner for both teams. WJ and Whitman are tied each with ten all-time girls county titles.

Fans favored Northwood to repeat as boys team county champions. Northwood's top four is lethal as demonstrated at last weekend's Consortia Championships and earlier at the Great American XC Fest. Northwood's relatively distant fifth man leaves the door open for Walter Johnson and Richard Montgomery to upset the defending champs.

Garrett Suhr is heavily favored to win his first XC county title after his tremendous 15:16.0 5k at the Great American XC Fest and a runner-up finish at the Oatlands Invitational.

If Suhr doesn't sit and kick then we should see both course records go...

There are three that might believe they can pace a record if pacers set them up, Suhr, Fantaw and Mengist. Suhr doesn't have to make the decision to go for the record. If either Fantaw or Mengist decides that their best chance of winning is running from the gun for the record then they will set Suhr up to kick to the record. As Keven described, at the Consortia they paced the first mile. Then Mengist knew he had to get away with 500 or so to go because they had let the pace go up the hill and through the part of the course with the technical footing. At Bohrer, they can chose to either pace from the gun or to feel each other out and fight surges with surges.

While I don't agree that Blair will win counties or beat Northwood at counties, unless Northword finds a 5th runner, Blair will do relatively better at counties than Northwood and relatively worse again at North regions.

Usually it’s 6. There’s 11 teams. Mervo and Kennedy May not have had 5 people run 2 meets this season and if they didn’t they won’t count towards the 11 teams and then 5 will qualify. Teams don’t always post all their results online. It likely will be 6.

WJ Boys smoked Northwood on Northwoods home course. Postseason is a lot closer to that course than great american

The runner up team this year has a good chance at being the fastest team in a decade to not win the whole thing on the boys side

This is one of the least competitive years for the county. Early in the decade, churchill, wootton, WJ, Bcc, whitman among others would slaughter this years field. Even Einstein 2012 could contend in the current landscape.

WJ needs to calm down. Gio had his boys tempo every meet. Check the Consortia times to see what Northwood actually runs on that course.
