With its 12th girls team county title since the meet's inception in 1977, Walter Johnson moved ahead of Whitman in the all-time girls team title count. Both schools were tied with 11 girls county titles prior to 2023. In addition to the all-time lead for team titles, the WJ girls have won six out of the last nine girls XC county titles dating back to 2014.
Wootton High School won its second male team county title in meet history. Wootton also won the boys team title in 2015. The Wootton boys extended their streak to 14 consecutive county meets finishing in the top 10 at the MCPS Championship. Only Whitman maintains a streak half that long (7 meets) among MCPS boys teams.
Several girls teams maintained long streaks finishing in the top ten at the MCPS Championship: Whitman (40+), Wootton (21), B-CC (16), Walter Johnson (11).
Rockville's girls team finished 11th, the best finish by a Rockville girls team since 1989. Rockville's boys team (16th) had its best team finish since 2012.
Individual Accolades
Nathaniel Swanson was the first individual male county champion from Winston Churchill High School. It is a surprising statistic since Churchill has had the third most All-County performers in meet history behind only WJ and Whitman. His victory in 15:51 was the 20th best performance all-time on the Bohrer Park course.
Katherine Morey was the third individual female county champion from Churchill High School. Her victory in 18:54 was the 30th best performance all-time on the Bohrer Park course. Morey became the fifth freshman county champion in meet history joining Sally Glynn (Walter Johnson, 1992), Halsey Sinclair (Montgomery Blair, 2003), Britt Eckerstrom (Northwest, 2008), and Lucy Srour (Churchill, 2011). Sally Glynn is the only individual to have won four Montgomery County XC titles.
It was the third time in meet history that the individual male and female county champions were from the same school. The other times were 1990 (Whitman) and 1993 (Walter Johnson).
Emilie Creighton was just the second girl from Blake High School to finish in the top ten at the MCPS Championship Meet. She tied Ella Ziegler (2021 meet) for the highest finish by a Blake girl (2nd) at the MCPS Championship Meet.
Alejandro Berrio was the first top ten finisher from Seneca Valley High School since 2002. His second place finish was the highest by a Seneca Valley boy or girl since 1996. His 15:52 performance was the 23rd best all-time on the Bohrer Park course.
