Team Tidbits

Blake High School girls won their third consecutive indoor county title.

Blair High School girls had their highest finish (6th) since 2006.

Springbrook High School girls (2nd) scored the most points ever by a Springbrook girls team (59.5).

Blair High School boys won their second indoor title in three years and scored 28 more points than it ever had at the MCPS Indoor Championship Meet (92).

B-CC High School boys had their highest finish (4th) since 1990 and scored the most points by a B-CC boys team since 1986 (48).

Individual Honors

After a 25 meet unbroken streak from 1993 to 2020*, the boys 55-meter dash county meet record has been lowered in three of the last four indoor county championship meets. Quentin Braithwaite from Montgomery Blair High School lowered the county meet record in the 55-meter dash by one-tenth of a second from 6.40 to 6.39. Braithwaite has four of the top nine 55-meter dash performances in meet history. He also recorded the #2 performance in meet history in the 300-meter dash, 35.03.

*Sayon Cooper's hand-timed 6.2 55-meter dash in 1993 was lost from the meet records for many years. Some athletes between 1994 and 2016 were led to believe they broke the meet record, but Mocorunning found sufficient evidence that Cooper's 6.2 (adjusted to 6.44) should have been considered the meet record until broken by Alonzo McBryde (6.41 FAT) in 2020.

Paint Branch High School broke the meet record in the boys 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:27.18. Paint Branch moved into a tie with Springbrook for most wins in meet history in the boys 4x400-meter relay. It was Springbrook's 2017 record of 3:28.17 which was broken by 0.99 seconds this year.

The closest athlete to breaking a girls meet record was Abigail Mokosso from Montgomery Blair who became just the third girl to clear 18-feet in the long jump at the indoor county championship meet. She was 2.75 inches shy of Thea LaFond's meet record (18-04) when she jumped 18-01.25.

Iyanni Daley from Wheaton High School became a three-time champion in the 55-meter dash at the Montgomery County Indoor Championship Meet. It matches what was once accomplished by Nina Warren (Gaithersburg '04), Olivia Ekponé (Northwest '11), and Taylor Wright (Northwest '19). Wright and Ekponé made it four which Daley has a chance to do next year.

With Jaayah Jenkins' second consecutive county title in the 500m (1:19.20), Blake moved into a four-way tie for the team with the most all-time county champions in the girls 500m. Whitman, Paint Branch, Richard Montgomery, and Blake have each won four county titles in the 500-meter in meet history. Will one school break the tie next year?

With Jacob Martin's county title in the 500m (1:05.44), Paint Branch moved into a four-way tie for the team with the most all-time county champions in the boys 500m. Damascus, Kennedy, Richard Montgomery, and Paint Branch have each won four county titles in the 500-meter in meet history. Will one school break the tie next year?

Is it a short term burst or the new norm? The average winning time of the girls 1600-meter run at the county championship meet over the last twenty years is 5:14. 11 girls have gone under 5:14 in the last two indoor county championship meets. Only 18 girls had gone under 5:14 in the previous 34 county championship meets. Walter Johnson's Megan Raue led the way with the new #5 performance in meet history, 5:05.70, and followed it up with the new #8 800-meter performance in meet history, 2:20.34.

Mocorunning's record book includes preliminary / semi-final times so it is more difficult for the sprinters and hurdlers to climb the individual lists. Elena Juarez of Gaithersburg tied for the 11th fastest girls 55-meter hurdles performances in meet history (8.29) but was the #6 individual performer in meet history when counting one performance per athlete. Similarly, Shiloh Bryant-Serrano of Paint Branch had the 14th fastest boys 55-meter hurdles performance in meet history (7.75) and was the #7 individual performer in meet history.

Sierra Swangin of Blake High School became a three time individual champion in the high jump. Only Alexus Pyles (Clarksburg '16) won four indoor county titles in the high jump. No other athlete besides Swangin won three indoor county titles in the high jump.

22 girls in meet history have won three or more individual indoor county titles in their high school career, a list which Iyanni Daley and Sierra Swangin are now apart of. Daley and Swangin join an even more exclusive list of just 10 girls who won a single event for three consecutive years at the indoor county championship meet.
