The two day format and beautiful weather in the upper 70's for much of the 2025 Montgomery County Championship Meet made for another record number of new entries into Mocorunning's County Championship Meet Record Book. There are 189 entries related to the year 2025 compared to 162 entries remaining from 2024, 134 entries remaining from 2014, 123 entries remaining from 2015, and 120 entries remaining from 2023. There has been a 13% turnover in Mocorunning's County Championship Meet Record Book in the last three years (versus an expected 7% turnover these three years).

Team Tidbits

Northwest won a record 5th boys team county title in meet history while Springbrook won its second girls team title in three years.

Northwest boys and runner-up Paint Branch boys maintained long active streaks of finishing in the top ten at the MCPS Championship Meet. Paint Branch has recorded top ten finishes in the last twelve county meets while Northwest has fifteen consecutive meets finishing in the top ten.

On the girls side, the Northwest girls (8th in 2025) are unrivaled in consecutive top ten finishes with fifteen consecutive meets finishing in the top ten. No other girls team has an active streak of more than four consecutive meets finishing in the top ten.

Seneca Valley girls had their highest team finish in meet history with a second place finish. Their previous best finish in the team standings was fifth. Seneca Valley also scored the most points it ever has at the MCPS Championship Meet, 62.5.

Sherwood boys had their highest team finish in meet history with a third place finish. Their previous best finish in the team standings was sixth. Sherwood also scored the most points it ever has at the MCPS Championship Meet, 63.

All-Time Performances

Four meet records were broken at the 2025 MCPS Championship Meet.

Ava Wilson of Whitman High School broke the old pole vault meet record of 10-07 with a mark of 11-feet even. The senior finished in the top 3 in the pole vault at the MCPS Championship Meet all four years of high school and holds three of the top seven pole vault marks in meet history. Teagan Bandholz of Poolesville High School added over six feet to the previous meet record in the discus with a mark of 136'-11". The distance that she put between herself and the previous record holder, Claudia Ababio (130-01 from 2014), makes this one of the most dominant records in meet history. The new record is 5.25% better than the second best performance in meet history (see last year's article for a longer discussion of this).

Rahmise Jones of Northwest High School added three inches to Roberto Terrell, Jr. and Kendall Wideman's long jump meet record of 22-11.50. This meet record has been tied or broken each of the last three years. Five of the top six marks in meet history are from 2022 to 2025. MoCo boys really seem to have unlocked the long jump these last few years.

Paint Branch chopped three seconds off the meet record in the boys 4x400-meter relay. According to the splits on athletic.net, Jacob Martin split 48.4 after he had already won the open 400m and 800m in 48.87 and 1:53.21, respectively. It's safe to say this was the most loaded boys 4x400m relay in meet history. Aside from the huge meet record, the top five teams from 2025 were under 3:25 and are now ranked in the top 17 in meet history in the boys 4x400m relay.

Near Misses: B-CC's Ani Bailin missed the girls 3200-meter meet record by 0.56 seconds. Her time of 10:39.60 is the new #3 performance in meet history. Northwood's Jayden Apenteng missed the boys 300-meter hurdles meet record by 0.48 seconds. His time of 38.72 is the new #2 performance in meet history.

James DeMoss and Multi-Event Winners

The athlete of the meet award is named for an MCPS track coach from the 1960's through the 1980's, James DeMoss. The award is voted on by coaches during the MCPS Championship Meet. This year's male winner was Mateo Gros-Slovinsky of Whitman High School. The girls winner was Ruth Ayuk-Takor of Paint Branch High School.

Mateo Gros-Slovinsky won the boys 1600m and 3200m in 4:14.72 and 9:32.23, respectively. He was also runner-up in the 800-meter in 1:55.02, but he could not keep pace with Jacob Martin's blazing 1:53.21 800m. Gros-Slovinsky's 800m time was #7 in meet history, 1600m time was #4 in meet history, and 3200m time was #25 in meet history. Combined with 2024's triple victory in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m, he is the first distance runner in meet history to win five individual county titles and just the sixth boy to ever win five individual county titles (the others are sprinters, jumpers, and hurdlers).

Ruth Ayuk-Takor of Paint Branch won the girls 200m, 400m, and contributed to the winning 4x200 and third place 4x400. Her 400m time of 56.78 ranks #14 in meet history. Paint Branch's 4x200m time of 1:41.96 ranks #9 in meet history.

Jacob Martin of Paint Branch won the 400m, 800m, and broke the meet record in the 4x400-meter relay. His 400m time of 48.87 ranks #13 in meet history. His 800m time of 1:53.21 ranks #3 in meet history.

Elena Juarez of Gaithersburg High School won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.72 (#18 in meet history) and the 300-meter hurdles in 44.96 (#5 in meet history). She also contributed to the winning 4x100-meter relay in 48.14 (#6 in meet history). She won the 100-meter hurdles race for the third consecutive year giving her four individual outdoor county titles in her high school career.

Samuel Koiwood of Watkins Mill High School won the boys 100m and 200m in 10.95 and 22.09, respectively.

Megan Raue of Walter Johnson High School won the 800m in 2:16.71 (#10 in meet history) and 1600m in 5:00.81 (#9 in meet history).

Blake High School's Sierra Swangin won the high jump for the third consecutive year at the MCPS Championship Meet, this year in 5'-4".
