Blair at Einstein Recap
By: Elaine Chung
Tuesday, September 16, 2008

The wind blew softly as the Einstein and Blair girls finished stretching and doing their final strides. The weather was cool and dry - perfect cross country conditions. The meet would be run on Einstein's brand new course (there was construction going on at Wheaton Regional Park, the site of Einstein's usual course). The course consisted of several loops weaving about fields and tennis courts around the Einstein campus. The runners would run mostly on grass with some pavement and a rocky path through a short wooded area. At just past 3:30, the girls lined up at the starting line.

The Einstein coach shouted "Bang!" and the girls were off. After the first 100 meters, Einstein's Sisi Reid and twins Ariam and Yodit Soloman emerged in the lead with Blair's Roxanne Oroxom, Elaine Chung, and Theresa Regan chasing close behind. Going down the first hill, Chung and Oroxom kicked hard and caught up to Reid, with Regan also closing in on the pack. By the first mile, Chung and Oroxom were leading the field with Reid and Regan trailing slightly back. Blair's Lorena Kowalewski, Myla Sapp, Abby Cember, Jan Nguyen, and Kathryn Klett were catching up with the Soloman twins. By the second mile, the gap between the first two groups of runners had widened, with Oroxom and Chung trading off the lead. Oroxom finished first in 22:32 with Chung right behind in 22:33. Reid outkicked Regan in the last 50 meters and finished first for Einstein in 22:51. Regan finished in 22:53.

After the fourth place, not a single runner finished within the next three minutes. It turned out that at about halfway in, the other group of girls had made a wrong turn, causing them to run about an extra half mile and adding several minutes to their time. To Einstein's credit, their coaches quickly grabbed some parent volunteers to help direct the race and the boys would later all race the correct course. Despite the confusion, the score came out with Blair ahead of Einstein 22 to 35. Coaches from both schools agreed that the wrong turn probably did not effect which school won the meet.

The boys race started at around 4:15. Blair's Rutvij Pandya and Greg Vogel quickly took the lead with Blair's Frank Wen right behind, followed closely by the Einstein pack of Dawit Zewede, Milo Johnson, Sam Rivers, and Alex Hevey. By the first mile, Zewede had passed Wen and the rest of the Einstein boys were closing in as well. Blair's Jeremy Ardanuy was following just behind. A half mile later, the Einstein boys looked strong while Wen faded back a little with Ardanuy working hard to maintain contact with the pack. With about half a mile remaining, Pandya was comfortably ahead with Vogel not far behind. Next came Zewede, Johnson, Rivers, Hevey, Ardanuy, and Wen, all spread out over about 100 meters. Up to their number four runners, Einstein and Blair were tied point-wise. Einstein's fifth runner had a comfortable lead over Blair's fifth, and if no one moved up, Einstein would win the race. Pandya finished first in 17:43 and Vogel came in soon after in 18:03. Zewede closed the gap on Vogel slightly and finished in 18:14. In the last half mile, Ardanuy dug deep and passed Rivers and Hevey, winning the meet for the Blair boys.

I'd say that's a pretty accurate article. Nicely written too. (Procrastinating? So much for getting homework done tonight...not that I can talk.)

"Captain Cool" is Petie Myos and no boys got lost...some just faltered in their following directions abilities. Plus no boys got lost, just one took a slightly wrong turn which was quickly fixed, at no point was there lost-ness.
