Mocorunning catches up with former Montgomery County runners just prior to most college conference championship meets.
Wil Zahorodny - Damascus 2008 - UNC Wilmington - My season has been pretty decent so far. I've had to make a huge transition into the style of this running program and I pretty much doubled my weekly volume from high school. My legs have been beat up at times but I know that I'm just getting used to everything and even though I may not do anything special this season this is gonna prepare me for what I'll be doing in track.
Laura McCary - Magruder 2007 - UNC Charlotte - This cross country season definitely started out a lot differently than I expected. I had taken off over two months last year and redshirted indoor track due to a few stress fractures in my foot. After this I felt like I was starting over with my running and it felt so weird to race again. This summer, Coach Timm and Vassili Triantos helped get me back in shape both physically and mentally for cross country. The first few races didn't go as well as I wanted, but within the past month I have been feeling more confident in workouts and races. My next race is the Atlantic 10 Conference meet which will be held on our campus for the first time so we're going to do whatever we can to win.
Sebi Devlin-Foltz - Einstein 2008 - Occidental College - One of the main reasons I chose to go to school in California was the total change in scenery, and so far my running experience has been just that. The bump up in both summer and in-season mileage was expected, but I hadn't prepared for all the non-running activities that are apparently pretty common at the college level. We'll do anything from aqua-jogging to quad-burning plyos throughout the week to avoid overuse injuries and promote good running form. Also, I'm seriously digging running in booty shorts everyday and am close to getting rid of my almost-translucent skin tone. At the same time though I'm loving the closeness of my college team as it reminds me so much of my past few years as a Titan. The academic side of things is obviously more intense, but xc forces you to stay on top of stuff, and from day one you know a group of upperclassmen who can guide your way. So far Eagle Rock, CA has been absolutely Moco-friendly and any of you 09'ers looking at D-III schools should check it out if you're into "hella" good weather, atmosphere and running programs.
Johanna Gretschel - Blair 2008 - Tulane University - This season is going as well as I could have hoped for, I've put in significantly more mileage than I have ever run before and as a result, my times have improved a lot from what I ran in high school. I miss my Blazers of course, but I love the Tulane team and I am so glad that I have the opportunity to train with this group of girls. We have a lot of fun together and we make each other work hard every practice. I love having girls to train with because then in meets we all try to stay together like our practices. The season is going well for all of us (including our new distance coach) so far and everything is looking good for conference on Nov. 1! p.s. unfortunately, the mocorunning.com addicion does not cease after high school graduation....
Kyle Short - B-CC 2008 - Washington University - College running isn't that different from what I did last year in high school. I think part of it is the difference between workouts. Last year we did a lot of 800s on a neighborhood loop near BCC and track workouts, but so far in college we have done mostly progressive tempo runs, extended fartliks, mile CV miles. Last year in Cross Country i was only running roughly 35 miles a week and now I'm running about 55 miles a week. The big difference is sleep. I struggled in the middle of the season with a sinus infection and I couldn't breath through my nose so I was really afraid of burning out so the key is to drink a lot of chocolate milk and orange juice. One final word of advice, take your easy days easy. That was part of the reason I was having crappy workouts and got sick, I wasn't giving myself time to recover. Your coach knows what he is doing and he will make sure you are ready to do what needs to be done at the end of the season.
Louise Hannallah - Churchill 2008 - Vanderbilt University - Running in college is a completely different experience than running in high school. Not only do you have to adjust to a new home, new friends, and new academic challenges, but you also have to adjust to a new team, new workouts, and new challenges. I love Vanderbilt and know that it is the perfect school for me, but I'm definately still getting used to the transition. I'm running 50-60 miles a week, where in high school I only ran 35-40 at the most. Cross country meets are completely different in college because of the level of competition. In high school I was used to my competition and knew how hard I had to run, where as in college I'm running against complete strangers and have no idea my pace or my strategy. Overall, it just takes adjustment. My coaches were really smart with easing me into the college running experience, and that helped me feel more comfortable with myself and the team. The most important thing I had to remind myself is that I run because I enjoy it. It is easy to get swept away in the competition in college, but my teammates are really supportive and have definately helped me through my transition. Running in college is a completely unique experience, it's more challenging and competitive, but that's why I love it!
Neal Darmody - Quince Orchard 2008 - High Point University - So far my season has been going well. I think the biggest adjustment from high school to college is the amount of work in both the academic side and running. During practices in college, we get a lot more done in the 2 hour long practice and the intensity is much greater. Another very hard adjustment is getting used to racing an 8k. I thought I had the 5k all figured out in high school and that the 8k would be easy to adapt to, but it is much more tricky than I thought it would be. I feel like I am finally getting adjusted to the 8k this late in the season and I look forward to running my conference meet this saturday. The last point I would like to bring up is in division 1 cross country, the competition level is mind blowing. Everyone in division 1 cross country were all the best of the best from their high schools, all state champions, and it is a hard adjustment to be racing with the greatest runners at every race. There is much more pressure to do well in college, but if I think the key is to put all the pressures aside and just have fun with running, why make it any harder than it is?
Below is a list of results that I have found for former Montgomery County rnners competing in college so far this cross country season. I could not possibly look up all results for all county alumni, but this is a pretty good sample.
