1A

Poolesville Boys
County Finish: 16th
Region Finish: 3rd
State Prediction: 3rd

David Wilson, 2010    Sam Widmayer, 2010    Ken Shimomoto, 2010    Nick Stavely, 2009    Josh Greenwald, 2010    Henry Giovannetti, 2009    Adam Altamirano, 2010

The Poolesville boys had a shimmer of hope for qualifying as a team to the 1A state championship. They had not qualified as a team since the 2003 season. The team was overjoyed when they learned that they not only qualified for the state meet, but they did so with plenty of room to spare. Their third place regional finish matches that from the 2003 season. Judging on regional results from around the state, they could potentially repeat that third place performance, but will certainly need to watch out for Smithsburg who was right on their heels last Thursday.

David Wilson, who qualified individually as a freshman but failed to qualify last year due to illness, will look to improve on his 24th place 18:46 finish from two years ago. After his sixth place finish at this year's regional meet, a medal is probable and a top ten finish is feasible given he runs his best.

A sprinter for Poolesville last spring, Sam Widmayer has been a great addition to this year's Poolesville cross country team, especially down the stretch. He dropped close to the 17 minute mark at the regional meet to finish within 7 seconds of Wilson. Widmayer could be a sleeper for all-state honors.

2A

Clarksburg Girls
County Finish: 13th
Region Finish: 5th
State Prediction: 10th

Lauren Sumner, 2010 Jenna Smith, 2009 Nancy Dawes, 2012 Kelsey Smith, 2009 Jacqui Young, 2012 Allison Choi, 2010 Lauren Carter, 2011

The Clarksburg girls put it all on the line at regionals. Competing in the tough 2A West Region, they needed to run their best to move on to the state championship. They did just that, taking the final ticket to Hereford with a fifth place team finish. Perhaps a strong run by Nancy Dawes helped to boost them beyond expectations. Dawes had not finished within a minute of Jenna Smith (pictured left) this season, but came within 11 seconds of her with a 22nd place finish at regionals.

According to Coach Nick Caretti, Clarksburg peaked at regionals and is trying to hold that peak over for another week after their somewhat surprising performance. They have been doing low mileage this week with quick intervals to stay sharp for Saturday. A top ten team finish is the goal, but most of the teams from the 2A South are going to be tough to beat on top of the four that beat them out of the West.
