The way that the 3A girls teams are expected to steal points from each other all weekend, it probably won't take much more than 50 points to win the girls 3A state title. That's good news for Kennedy's Thea LaFond who just scored 40 points at the 3A West Region Championship Meet. LaFond is favored to win the long jump and triple jump and should score a lot of points in the high jump and 100-meter hurdles. With 32 points or more, Brittanie Morris can tack on some points in the hurdle races and Anna Ucheumumu can add on more in the discus if she matches her personal best of 105 feet. If these things happen, it just might be enough for the three girls to hoist up a team trophy at the end of the day.
Northwood won the 3A West Region, but Le'Quisha Parker and the Gladiators have a difficult path to a state title. The 3A girls sprints are competitive and Parker and Yamu Sarr will be up against the Catonsville team led by Xauddina Whittington. Despite the tough competition, I suspect Parker will have a big day and rise to the occasion. A vault of 9-06 from Naami Wagner would give Northwood a big boost.
If Northwood and Catonsville cancel each other out, and Kennedy doesn't get enough points out of their three girls, then spin the wheel to pick a favorite. Clarksburg and Damascus have about as good of a chance as anyone else. Jordan Pitchford of Damascus qualified in all three jumps while Alex Carroll has the top seed in the 800 and leads the top seeded 4x800 relay. Could the indoor state champ Lauren Sumner of Clarksburg come up and grab the 800 state title, or will it be someone else? Clarksburg also has two qualifiers in the triple jump and three qualifiers in the high jump.
I would expect to see Largo in the hunt for the team title, too.
Quince Orchard's Shannon Dwyer will compete to win the 300 hurdles and Seneca Valley's Virginia Owusu-Mainoo will compete to win the discus.
