Northwest's Shyheim Wright threw down the fastest 300m hurdles ever recorded by a Montgomery County athlete - 37.36 - at the 4A West Regional Meet, but as you can see from the photo above, Wright didn't even lead for most of the race! Andrew Daniels set the table with a hard first 200 meters. Wright crushed the final 50 meters to break the all-time Montgomery County record while Daniels recorded a MoCo top-5 all-time performance from any meet in history with a time of 38.06.

Past Years of Divisional Standings

Watkins Mill HS Honored Late Jim Vollmer with Inaugural Invitational

The boisterous and beloved Montgomery County coach of more than 20 years passed away suddenly due to a heart attack on the weekend of the outdoor state championship meet in 2014. Fittingly, one of Vollmer's last cross country pupils, Andrew Lent of Poolesville, won the 1600-meter race that was named in Jim's honor.

Donovan Beckett-Simms Interview

Donovan Beckett-Simms is a triple jump and long jump specialist from Seneca Valley who this season broke the indoor county championship meet record in the triple jump with a mark of 45-09.00. It was the top indoor triple jump performance by a Montgomery County athlete in at least a decade. While the Maryland state meet does not contest the triple jump, he will compete at New Balance Nationals and carry his momentum into the outdoor season where he hopes that he can improve to become one of Montgomery County's all-time greatest jumpers. Read on to get to know Donovan Beckett-Simms.

Mocorunning is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Fred Joyce, a true Montgomery County coaching legend. Just this past year, Joyce was inducted into the Gaithersburg High School Athletics Hall of Fame for his coaching contributions to football and track & field between 1964 and 2010. He coached seven state championship track teams and four state finalists (runners-up). He coached all aspects of track but specialized in field events and throwing events in particular. In the jumps and throws alone, he coached more than 40 individual state champions. In 2009, he was voted by his peers as a Mocorunning.com coach of the decade, but it just as easily could have been called a lifetime achievement recognition. He is also in the Maryland High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. This Article was published on Mocorunning in 2007 when Joyce stepped away from teaching physical education and away from a leading roll with the track team, but he continued to volunteer his expertise for a number of years. Joyce's coaching career influenced an enormous number of people, and indeed his coaching influenced the creator of this website. May he rest in peace and always be remembered as one of the greats.

Consortia XC Championships Preview

Northwood's Michael Abebe and Paint Branch's Bethlehem Taye are heavily favored. Can they be toppled on Northwood's challenging course?

Northwood will recognize the 40th anniversary of the first girls cross country state championship meet in Maryland which took place in 1975. Northwood won that first girls state title with 73 points by taking three of the first four positions. The first individual female state champion was Mary Walsh of Northwood who completed the 2.5 mile course at the Naval Academy in 15:07, a victory by 53 seconds over the second place runner. The coach of that team was Dan Reeks, who remains a track and cross country coach in Montgomery County to this day.
