Amigh, Davis Win State Track Titles

Kevin Amigh and Vic Davis - distance runner and sprinter - captured Montgomery County's only two state track titles, winning the two-mile and the 50-yard dash.

Davis, leading Richard Montgomery to a third-place finish as a team in the AB competition, clocked a 5.4 on the Catonsville Community College track, bettering his last two efforts of 5.6 in the county and 5.5 in the bi-county meet.

Amigh, Gaithersburg's premier distance man, clocked a 9:43.4 in the two-mile. He also topped his two previous performances - having run a 9:52.2 in the county and a 9:48.4 in the bi-county.

Teamwise, Crossland dominated the AA with 98 points to Arundel's 38 1/2, Northwestern's 27 and Gaithersburg's 20.

In the combined AB meet, Fairmont Heights and Friendly tied for team honors with 87 points each, followed by Richard Montgomery with 27.

Kennedy - with the strongest distance contingent in the state - was stricken by the flu and its big men did not compete. Ed Boggess, who had won the county 1000, mile and two-mile, finished sixth in the state mile at 4:41.9 and opted not to run in the other two events.

The non-appearance of Kennedy may have had a direct effect on the eventual tie as its placing in the distance runs would have pushed Friendly runners back a place or two, thus costing the team what turned out to be crucial points.

Amigh, in helping the Trojans to fourth, also ran third in the mile (4:32) behind Crossland's Kent Burno (4:29.8) and Glen Chumley of Arundel (4:31.2).

For Richard Montgomery, Steve Jenkins, with a 6.5 in the 50 high hurdles, was second to Leroy Walker of Friendly (6.4) and Tim Gavin clocked a 4:36 in the mile for third place.

Paint Branch's 4-by-264 relay team was third in the AB with a time of 2:01.1 and Mark Christiansen, Northwood's 1000-yard runner who won the bi-county meet, was third at 2:21.1.

In the AA, Peary's Dave Stalters kept close to Amigh in the two-mile before Amigh pulled away on the final quarter. Stalters finished in 9:54.5.

Third places in the AA were taken by Brock Ware of Churchill in the 50-yard dash and by Peary's John Philbin, clearing the pole vault at 12 feet.
