Jim Ward

Jim Ward
Einstein High, indoor track

Sprinter Jim Ward didn't have much time to relax Saturday at Towson State University where he and the Titans were running in the county indoor track meet. That day he captured four gold medals, including two in less than 10 minutes.

"It's probably been done before, but I don't remember when," said Coach Jim Brown.

The day began for Ward with the 300-meter dash, which replaced the 300-yard dash in the county meet this year. Ward won with a time of 36.2 seconds, setting the standard for those who follow the senior to shoot for. Incidentally, Ward also holds the county record for the 300-yard dash at 33.0 seconds.

Next came the 55-meter hurdles, an event Ward just started practicing in November, Brown said. He won in 7.7 seconds. After the girls ran the same event, Ward came back and took the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.5 seconds. Ward closed the day anchoring the Titans' 1,600-meter relay team, which won the gold medal.

Winning four gold medals is not new to Ward. He accomplished the same feat last year. He was on two winning relay teams and won the 300-yard dash and the 55-meter dash, which he also won as a sophomore. All told, Ward has won nine gold medals during his career in indoor track.

For his performance on the track, Jim Ward is The Journal Athlete of the Week.
