Glynn qualifies for world meet in cross country
Sally Glynn, a junior at Walter Johnson High School, finished fourth out of a field of 45 runners last weekend at the USA Women's World Cross Country Trials in Birmingham, Ala.
The race's top six finishers earned spots on the U.S. team that will travel to Durham, England, for the World Cross Country Championships on March 25.
Glynn finished the 4,077-meter race in 14 minutes, 14 seconds.
The event was won by Kortney Dunscombe of Stanford University in 14:09. Jessica Fry, of the University of Alabama, was second (14:11); Mary Cobb, from Maine's Pittsfield High School was third (14:12).
More than 40 countries will send teams to England. With the U.S. Olympic Committee's aid, the Junior Women's team should be one of the strongest U.S. teams to compete in the World Championships in recent years. Through a grant to the sport's governing body, USA Track and Field, the committee supported travel to the trials for the top 14 U.S. juniors (under 20 years of age).
A 12-time state champion, Glynn was scheduled to compete in four events at the Maryland Class 3A Indoor Track & Field State Meet at the 5th Regiment Armory in Baltimore last night (see tomorrow's Journal for results). She is also set to run in the High School Invitational Mile at the Mobil Invitational at George Mason University on Saturday.
