Walker anchor provides title for Kennedy boys

Special to the Journal
Watching Kennedy senior Marty Walker pursue the Frederick and Middletown anchor runners in the mile relay at the Baltimore National Guard Armory in the Region I championships Monday night was reminiscent of the county meet when Walker came from a distant last to finish third, giving the Cavaliers the team title.

This time Walker, 17, received the baton in third place and almost calmly strode past both leaders on the gun lap to win in 3:34.6. Kennedy needed at least a second to guarantee the title.

Behind Walker's victories in the 300- and 500-meter runs and anchors on the winning 800- and 1600-meter relays, Kennedy's boys won their first indoor title, scoring 67 points. Middletown finished second at 63 and Frederick scored 45 1/2 for third.

"We've never done anything indoors," said Kennedy Coach Allan Bellman. "We knew the relays would do well with Adai (LeMone) in the sprints and hurdles and Marty in the 300, but the thing we weren't expecting was Marty winning the 500. That gave us the leeway we didn't think we'd have."

Blair's Amanuel Asefaw also doubled, winning the 1600- and 3200-meter runs.

In girls' competition, Whitman's Susie Zilvitis, a sophomore transfer from Connecticut, won the 800- and 1600-meter runs and ate up the track as anchor on the 3200-meter relay team to catch all but Woodward's Jenny Kraich by the tape. She had received the baton a good 80 yards behind the leader.

Whitman, placing at least one competitor in all 12 events, scored 83 points to win the team title. Linganore was second at 52, followed by Magruder at 37, five points ahead of Walter Johnson.

Magruder's Wanda Evans won the 55- and 300-meter dashes.
