Track run-down

Montgomery County isn't considered a high school track and field powerhouse. In last week's Class 3A and 4A state track meets no county team finished better than fourth place.

But there were several individual performances worthy of mention.

First and foremost was Whitman's Carol Borstosiewicz. She won the 1,600-meter run in 5:26.8 and the 3,200-meter run in 11:54.8. B-CC's Claire Torchia was close behind, finishing second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600. Walter Johnson's Robin Smith won the 55-meter dash in 7.4 seconds.

Two county boys made first-place showings in the Class 3A meet. Jesse Patterson won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.8 and Kris Gawin won the 800-meter run in 2:07. Watkins Mill's Barry Duvall took second place in the 300- and 500-meter runs.

In the Class 4A boys meet, Springbrook's John Mondy won the 1,600 in 4:37.2 and finished second in the 500 in 1:08.59. Quince Orchard's Tracy Harry took the 3,200 in 10:34.7.

On the 4A girls side, Kristine Jost of Quince Orchard was the county's only winner, taking the 800 in 2:20.46. Jost also finished second in the 1,600. Paint Branch sprinter Teresa Israel finished third in the 55 and second in the 300.

In the Class 2A meet, Antoine McLauren of Damascus finished second in the high jump and the Hornets' Jennifer Harrison took third in the 55 hurdles.

[Mocorunning note: This article was transcribed as originally published in the Montgomery Journal. Kristine Jost did not compete for Quince Orchard and Troy Harry won the 3200, not Tracy Harry.]
