Watkins Mill girls team runs away with events, earns its first state title

As the Class 3A state high school indoor track meet wound down on Monday night the Watkins Mill girls team knew it had run a good meet. But with the score being kept on paper, they weren't sure exactly where they stood.

Third, maybe second place, the girls and Coach Al Bellman figured. In the final event, the mile relay, the team of Carolyn Schwartz, Brooke Ford, Anne Singer and Kecia Herod ripped off a 4:20.2 and won the event. And when the scores were announced the Wolverines got a pleasant surprise.

"They were shocked," Bellman said. "We didn't expect to win. We expected to get third. The kids had no idea until they started announcing the scores. When they announced Linganore as the second-place team it dawned on them what had happened."

Linganore led Watkins Mill 46-39 going into the mile relay. The Wolverines got 10 points for the win and Linganore failed to score, giving Watkins Mill a 49-46 win.

It was the first team state championship for the 4-year-old school.

The Wolverines also won the two-mile relay in record-setting time. Singer, Herod, Rebeccah Wasner and Maren Ahlquist ran a 10:06, the best time ever in the 3A state meet.

Wasner also won the mile run in 5:20.2. Herod added a second-place finish in the 500-meter run.

Several other county athletes won individual titles at the 3A meet. Claire Torchia of B-CC won the two-mile in 11:42.2. Katia Crowe of Seneca Valley won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.9 seconds. Robin Smith of Walter Johnson won the 55-meter dash in 7.5 seconds and Desiree Ficker of Whitman won the 800-meter run in 2:27.7.

On the boys side, Josh Orenstein of Walter Johnson won the 1,600-meter run in 4:33.2. Peter Kimball of Whitman won the 800-meter run in 2:03.0. Jessie Patterson of B-CC defended his state championship in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.9 seconds.
