On a day more suited for Noah's Ark, and on a track better equipped for a crew race, Churchill placed third in the triple jump - the final event of the day - to nip Richard Montgomery Saturday in the third annual Woodward Relays.

Brock Ware led Churchill's strong showing as the hurdler helped the Bulldogs establish two meet records with a 1:04.1 in the shuttle high hurdles and a 55.8 in the shuttle lows. As expected, Doug Johncox also performed well, aiding his team to first place in the long jump.

The Richard Montgomery squad, which is 5-0 in the A League this season, is the strongest team coach Bill Barnes has had in five years, got points in all but three of the 15 events in finishing second with 77 1/2 points to Churchill's 78 1/2. The outcome could have been different had the 880 relay team, which Barnes said he had high hopes for, not fumbled a handoff that cost them a chance for points.

Starring for the Rockets were Mark Munzer, Jon Kubas and Dan Franklin, a triumverate that won both the discus and shot put relays.

Meet director Greg Dunston thought that the meet ran fairly well, considering the rain that interrupted things around noon and threatened cancellation.

"There would've been more records set without the wind and rain," Dunston [illegible]...on running the four-mile in under 18 minutes, but with the wind, they couldn't." As it was, Ed Boggess, Kent Thomas, John Holcomb and Richard Ballard won for the Cavaliers in 18:36.6."

Despite the half hour delay caused by the downpour, many devout track people knew that the meet would resume sometime during the day. "Man, nothing stops track," pointed out one competitor.

Gaithersburg, which finished third with 51 points, added one meet record with a 44.0 in the 440 while Northwood's high jumping team of Kevin Haughton, George Clay and Mark Morganstein broke its record of last year with a combined height of 17-9.

Dean Drewyer of Georgetown Prep won the featured steeplechase race, an event not included in the team standings.
