Prep, Churchill Tie in Relays

Track shoes squished through the mud and across wet grass as 21 teams started en masse at the third Woodward Relays last Friday afternoon. When it was all over, Churchill and Georgetown Prep were tied with the lowest score and had to share the championship trophy.

Prep's Dean Drewyer and John Donegan were the fastest pair in the meet, followed by Richard and Brian Brody of Whitman in second place and Dave Hall and Jim Angell in third.

Each pair of runners ran alternate miles across the Woodward athletic fields, out onto Old Georgetown Rd. and then down a hill through a patch of woods for a total of six miles per pair.

IN THE GIRLS event, in which each pair ran a total of four miles, Julia Lin and Karen Brown were the fastest pair and led Kennedy to first place. Springbrook was second as a team, placing three pairs among the top ten finishers. Erica Weimann and Karla Cory were third; Caterina Gor and Susan White, fourth; and Sandy Weimann and Cathy Lumpkin, seventh.

Patty Fogarty and Patty Pingitore were fifth for Kennedy to give the team a total of five points, three ahead of Springbrook and six in front of third-place Whitman. (Only the top two pairs counted in the girls meet and No. 2 didn't count in the team standings.) Woodward, Walter Johnson and B-CC were the next three team finishers for the girls.

Ruth Ann Drengwitz and Mary Jane Drengwitz of Northwood were the second-place pair. Others in the top 15 for the girls were Karen Felber and Moria Guay, Walter Johnson, sixth; Patty Sullivan and Liz Hantzes, Woodward, eighth; Anne Li and Andrea Ray, Whitman, ninth; Gay Plungas and Margaret Durfey, Woodward, tenth; Lynn Siguenza and Charlene Ozahne, Woodward, 11th; Kristi Nelson and Anne Keeler, B-CC, 12th; Dawn Ludwig and Krista Carallo, Gaithersburg, 13th; Joanne Corini and Giselle Weimann, Springbrook, 14th; and Margaret Leibler and Eileen Wall, WJ, 15th.

Led by the Brody brothers and Larry Delaplane and Rob Lamar (tenth), Whitman was the third-place finisher in the boys' relay.

FOR THE CHAMPIONS from Prep and Churchill, each team's top three pairs combined for the 24 points, ten ahead of the Vikings.

Prep's Anthony Desir and Roger O'Donoghue were sixth to support Drewyer and Donegan. Behind Hall and Angell for Churchill were Mike Jurgovan and George DeWitt in eighth and Rich Coffin and Chris Lockett, 14th.

The rest of the top 15 finishing pairs were John Stewart and Mark Dorsett, Richard Montgomery, fifth; Bill Huott and Steve Strothers, Springbrook, sixth; Tim Good and Bill Kouach, Springbrook, seventh; Pat Key and Jim Hoge, Peary, ninth; Mark Eades and John Carville, Magruder, 11th; Wayne Harris and John Holcomb, Kennedy, 12th; Joe Taboda and Robert Jones, Richard Montgomery, 13th; and John Fitch and Glen Blaszkewicz, Sherwood, 15th.

THE WOODWARD RELAYS have developed into the kick-off for the cross country season and over the wet Woodward course came an indication of the season to come. Churchill, which was upset in the county championship last fall by Peary, has its top runners back and will be the toughest in the AA, again, although Whitman is strong with Brody and Brody.

The A Leage is a far cry from what it was a year ago, although Richard Montgomery looked strong at Woodward. Kennedy, the defending county and state champion, only had two runners in the relays while two returners, Kent Thomas and George Trice, were watching with injuries.

Last year's county B League winner, Craig Caricini of Damascus, place 16th at Woodward.
