County dominates All-State team; Jacobson is runner of the year

Special to the Journal

Montgomery County Runners dominated the Maryland State Track Coaches Association all-state cross-country teams. All told, six boys and five girls were nominated to the first and second teams. In addition, Beth Jacobson of Kennedy was voted the girls runner of the year.

Votes cast are based on performance throughout the season with emphasis on the championship portion. Level of finish and invitational competition is also considered and, finally, a runner's record overall is used in the decision-making process.

Jacobson, a senior, rounder out a near-perfect, four-year stint at Kennedy with her third cross country state championship in a row. Her complete dominance of class A girls distance runners during her four seasons with the Cavaliers and her regional and state performances this year made Jacobson an easy choice for runner of the year.

She is undefeated in class A competition winning, her regional race by almost two minutes and winning the state this year by almost a minute. Her sole losses this year came at the hands of Northern Virginia runners and two county AA competitors.

Those two county runners, Springbrook freshman Annie Hoefler and Churchill senior Tammy DeVore are teammates with Jacobson on the All-State ballot. They are ranked second and third respectively behind Jacobson on the first-team.

Hoefler overcame a less than optimum early season to capture the regional and state AA titles from defending champion DeVore. In doing so, she recorded the fastest times of the day on the A-II and AA-I regional course at the National Bureau of Standards and at the state meet at Hereford. At the latter, she recorded the second fastest all-time time run on Hereford's 2.5 mile course.

The zenith of DeVore's season came at the Georgetown Prep Classic where she finished second to eventual Virginia State champion Langley sophomore Erin Keough in the seeded section. Hoefler was 5th and Jacobson 6th.

Whitman's Eric Meleney was ranked third on the boys first team. His invitational victories included the Spikes Shoe in course record time and prep seeded section. He added to that the AA-I region by over 30 seconds and the state meet.

Right behind him in the pecking order is Georgetown Prep's John Caldwell. Caldwell experienced a bad day at the Prep Classic, but came back in fine fashion. He won the Metro Catholic Championships by almost 30 seconds, finished second by two seconds to St. Albans Duncan Schloss in the IAC's, and finished second again in the State Catholic Championships to runner of the year, Jim Hessenauer of Curley. In pushing Hessenauer the entire three-mile distance, Caldwell recorded the third fastest time ever on the prep course, with Hessenauer recording the second fastest ever.

Good Counsel's Eric Sierka is ranked fourth on the first team.He won his section at Georgetown Prep and captured the WMAC championship by a large margin.

Ranked 7th on the first squad is Rockville's Dave Petzold. The talented senior led the Rams to a 2nd place state finish by coming in 2nd to Central's Kirk Young (second in the all-state voting) in the class A state meet.
