COURSE: The course is a challenging 5k course on grass, dirt and gravel
paths, with significant
hills, shallow stream crossings and a 5 meter asphalt road crossing.
This year's course
will contain SLIGHT alterations from last year due to construction at
Lake Fairfax. The
changes will include two minor alterations:
1. Slightly diverting the first 150 meters of the course to a new
position about 20
meters to the right of last year's first 150 meters to negotiate some
road
construction. The starting line will be in the same location as last
year.
2. Alteration of the course at the 1.3 mile mark where the runners leave
the cricket
fields to enter the woods that lead to the soccer fields. The footpath
near the
parking lot at the cricket fields that leads into the woods has been
closed to
traffic. A new footpath takes runners into the woods about 80 meters
earlier than
the closed footpath. The new footpath involves a gentler downhill into
the woods
and better footing than the old rutted dirt footpath.
3. Race distance lost to course alteration #2 above will be regained by
extending the
uphill starting straightway slightly farther up toward the park entrance
and
extending the finish line farther back on the finish area flat.
As in years past, the course will be marked with a continuous white
paint line and landscape
flags delineating the course through open areas such as athletic fields.
1 mile and 2 mile marks
will also be painted.
